Martin Scorsese's Gangs Of New York features one of the most impressive casts in recent memory, with Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis returning to the big screen for the first time in five years to join Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent and Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio.

The gritty drama, which tells the story of rival gangs in New York – "the nativists… versus the hordes of immigrants", explains Leo – immediately began generating Oscar buzz for its stellar cast, despite that fact that its release was delayed for a year due to cost overruns and the global climate after September 11.

Leo, who along with Scorsese paid for the film's growing costs by forfeiting part of his paycheck, described what is was like to work with his "intense" method-acting co-star Daniel, who plays on-screen rival Bill The Butcher. "I rehearse (the role)… but I'm not Daniel Day-Lewis in the sense that I'm sharpening knives during lunch," he says. "I'm eating during lunch. I think I might go crazy if I were in character 24 hours a day. I have a limited focus."

"Leo's loose," agrees Daniel, who garnered an Oscar nomination for his role. He adds: "The work doesn't look pondered over. He's got a head working there, but there are times when your mind can become an impediment."

Gangs Of New York opens in the US on December 20 and hits UK screens January 10.
