Having long-promised a children's book series, pop star Madonna is set to blaze trails in the genre. A major publishing house has confirmed that the Evita star has signed a five-book contract with their children's subdivision, promising: "As with everything she does, Madonna is once again going to surprise, delight and lead the way."

The first story, entitled The English Roses, will be released in September of this year, published by Penguin in the UK and Calloway Editions in the US. All five books are for children aged six and above, and each instalment will be illustrated by the work of a different artist. "These are magical stories for children of all ages – even grown up ones," says a Calloway representative.

Publisher Penguin also expressed delight at adding the singer-actress to their Puffin division's roster of celebrated authors, which includes the late Roald Dahl. "Madonna is an artist with a universal appeal and these books will touch children of all backgrounds everywhere in the world," said a spokesperson for the company.
