20 JUNE 2003
Tom Cruise was looking characteristically dashing as he collected an award from the National Mentoring Partnership in New York's Chelsea Piers on Thursday night. But 6ft 10in basketball legend Bill Russell seemed head-and-shoulders above the Mission Impossible star when they met on the red carpet.

That didn't stop Tom, who has just finished filming his new epic The Last Samurai, receiving his gong, however. The handsome actor was being honoured with the Excellence in Mentoring Award for Program Leadership for his work as a founding member of the Hollywood Education And Literacy Project (HELP). The programme gives free tutoring to needy students and their families.

And his glamorous girlfriend Penelope Cruz was also on hand, sporting a new shoulder-length bob. Both dressed in simple black, the A-list couple sent waiting photographers into a frenzy.

Veteran newscaster Tom Brokaw was also honoured at the event, for his efforts as a media spokesperson for youth mentoring.
