Summer’s hottest denim looks

Denim never goes out of fashion, and this season the versatile material is key to many of the trends to have made their way from the fashion week catwalks to the high street.

Here we investigate three of spring/summer’s hottest denim looks and how to wear them.

Seventies
It’s a case of glamour puss meets boho beauty for this season’s Seventies trend. Among the tropical prints, slinky jumpsuits and bold colour-block pieces, everyday denim makes this an easy look to buy into.

Derek Lam, Thakoon and Pucci were among the top name fashion houses to champion denim flared jeans on the fashion week runways, making the flattering fit a season essential.

A-line denim skirts are another item enjoying a style revival for spring/summer, with Stella McCartney, Derek Lam and Tommy Hilfiger pairing mid-length skirts with denim shirts and jackets for a double denim dream.

And denim jumpsuits have been softened with ruffles, ties and bandeau necklines to make for the perfect pretty day-time look this season.

Pair your Seventies’ denim essentials with wedges and a simple white vest top for easy summer style, and add beads, bangles or a retro-print scarf for pops of colour.

Americana
Taking inspiration from the fabulous Fifties, this season’s Americana trend is also breathing new life into denim fashions from the past.

Skinny jeans have been given an update, with straight-leg capri pant styles evoking the glamour of Fifties fashions.

And dungarees – an American classic - have proved a big street style hit, with 2010 fashion week fashions making their way onto the high-street and now onto the beach as short sets provide a cute alternative to summer dresses.

Create the perfect Americana outfit with a gingham or polka dot halterneck top or tie a checked shirt at the waist for pin-up appeal. For a subtle nod to vintage stateside style, wrap your hair up in a scarf and tie at the top of your head.

Boyfriend benefits
The increasing appeal of unisex pieces, such as boyfriend blazers, brogues and denim and checked shirts, has also jettisoned men’s jeans styles onto the women’s fashion week catwalks over recent seasons, and boyfriend jeans are here to stay for spring/summer.

A big hit with stylish celebrities including Victoria Beckham, Rachel Bilson and Jessica Alba, distressed and ripped boy fit styles are perfect for casual day time looks. Paired with celeb essentials, such as oversized bags, aviator-style shades and light summer scarves, they form the basis of many a star’s trademark off-duty style.

This summer, wear with Breton stripes and espadrilles for a relaxed beach look, or turn up and add killer heels and a sleek boyfriend blazer for an edgy night time outfit.
