Iconic brides without the white gown

06 SEPTEMBER 2012 Many of the most iconic brides – Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn to name a couple – didn't pick the classic white gown.

And there's no reason you should have to follow tradition either.

A wedding dress and veil aren't entirely necessary to look the perfect bride. Play with textures, colours and fit to find something that suits you and your chosen style of the day.

An alternative dress goes perfectly with an alternative venue.

For those steering clear of the chapel, base your outfit around the ceremony that sums up the tastes and values you and your groom share as a couple.

Sofia Coppola surprised guests in a lavender chiffon dress cut to the knee that suited the Italian villa of her late summer wedding to long-term boyfriend Thomas Mars.

In her eight spectacular weddings Elizabeth Taylor brought to the aisle an array of stunning dresses that reflected her relationship with the groom.

With her fourth husband, singer Eddie Fisher for whom she converted to Judaism, she kept her bridal outfit elegantly modest in a short, hooded, forest green dress with matching shoes.

Don't be afraid of colour. Take a leaf from these iconic yet non-traditional brides for an unforgettable and individual wedding.
