First Lady prepares food bags for hungry kids in Washington

As a mum-of-two Michelle Obama knows the importance of healthy eating for youngsters. So on Wednesday she put on her trainers and headed for a Washington DC food bank, along with the Vice President's wife Dr Jill Biden, to help prepare food bags for kids.

The First Lady joined around 100 other congressional spouses doing their bit by volunteering to prepare 2,000 bags which will be handed out to children as part of the Feeding America organisation's Weekend Bag Programme.

Bags, which contain enough food to make five meals, are handed out  to young people to tide them over the weekend when they don't have access to school dinners.

The service helps feed 1,000 children a week.

Washington food banks are reporting record numbers of people seeking food assistance as a result of job losses and having their homes repossessed.

Approximately one in five children are at risk of hunger in the area .
