Former US Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper are to separate after 40 years of marriage.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner released a statement saying it was "a mutual and mutually supportive decision."
Bill Clinton's vice president, who ran for the top job himself in 2000, is a climate change campaigner and in 2006 released documentary An Inconvenient Truth to critical acclaim.
The couple married in 1970 and have four children.
In an email to friends and supporters the pair said they had decided to split after "long and careful consideration".
They have asked for privacy and intend to make no further comment.
