John Terry is stripped of England captaincy

John Terry has officially been stripped of his England captaincy, the Football Association have confirmed.

He is due in court in July over a racial abuse incident against Queen's Park Rangers' player Anton Ferdinand, which the footballer vehemently denies.

In a statement the FA announced that John will not "captain the England team until the allegations against him are resolved.

"This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament."

The statement also confirmed that England manager Fabio Capello will now have to choose a new captain to lead the team into the European Championships.

"Fabio Capello will take the decision as to who will be made captain moving forward."
