Kayaking Russell Crowe rescued by Coast Guard

A kayaking trip took an unexpected turn for Russell Crowe and a friend after they had to be rescued by the Coast Guard.

The Oscar-winning actor paddled out of Cold Spring Harbour on Long Island Sound, near New York, where he is filming new movie Oyster Bay.

The pair lost their way at sunset, and made their way towards Huntington Bay beach where they signalled a patrol boat for help.

The Gladiator star paddled to the boat with his companion and hitched a lift to Huntington Harbour. No-one was injured in the process.

Russell sent out a message on Twitter thanking the Coast Guard for the rescue.

"Thanks to Seth and the boys at the US Coast Guard for guiding the way... 4 hrs 30 mins," he wrote.
