Becks' grief for grandfather who made him a star

Becks' grief for grandfather who made him a star

David Beckham is mourning the loss of his beloved grandfather - the man who set him on the road to stardom.

Joseph West, 83, who lived in Islington, North London, with his wife Peggy (right), had been ill for some time before he passed away.

The football fan paid £125 to send David to a Bobby Charlton soccer school as a youngster, where he caught the eye of Manchester United scouts.

"How can I thank him enough? It turned out to be the defining moment in my career," David has previously said.

"He and the whole family are understandably very upset. They loved Joe so much. He was a wonderful man and so very close to David and the boys," a source says.

David, who is currently representing England in South Africa at the 2010 World Cup draw, is said to be "deeply upset".

He may miss the Friday event and fly home for the funeral, it has been reported.
