Following her shock split from husband Jordan Bratman in October, Christina Aguilera has decided to speak out about the end of her marriage.
The 29-year-old singer has revealed she filed for divorce after realising the relationship had been "unhealthy and unhappy" for both parties.
And, she told People magazine, she strongly felt that separating was the best thing to do for their two-year-old son Max.
"I really didn’t want to hurt Jordan, and I felt really torn up about splitting our family up," she said.
"When you're unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer. That’s the last thing I wanted for my son."
The US songstress has spoken in the past about her parents' own turbulent relationship, which ended in divorce when she was seven.
Since the end of her nearly five-year marriage, Christina has been seen out and about with new man, Matthew Rutler, a set assistant she met while working on her film Burlesque.
Seemingly confirming their blossoming relationship, the pop star said: "He's the kind of person you could spend hours on the phone talking to and all of a sudden it's daylight."
