US president Barack Obama chose to return to Chicago, his adopted home, for his 50th birthday.
He was serenaded by local musicians including jazz legend Herbie Hancock and Jennifer Hudson.
They led a crowd of 2,400 at a fundraiser in singing Happy Birthday to the commander-in-chief.
The US leader was raised in Hawaii but lived and worked for most of his adult life in the Windy City.
Also toasting him was Rahm Emanuel, his former White House chief of staff, who is now the city's mayor.
Asked by a fan on Twitter how it felt to sing for the president, Jennifer replied: "It's always an honour!
"No matter how many times I sing for him it always feels like the first time".
