Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies at 56

Thursday October 6, 2011

Steve Jobs, the driving force and co-founder of Apple, died on Wednesday night after losing his battle with cancer.

The news comes just six weeks after he left his position as the tech giant's CEO, and a day after the company launched its latest iPhone model.

Steve nurtured the business that he started in his garage to become one of the most successful, innovative and recognisable brands in the world.

Apple's success was largely tied to the persona of its founder, whose inspirational speeches and marketing savvy were the hallmarks of every product launch.

Many prominent figures have lined up to offer their condolences.

President Barack Obama said: "The world has lost a visionary."

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, also expressed his sympathy: "Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend.

"Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you."

The future for Apple will now be in the hands of current CEO, Tim Cook, who presented the new iPhone on Tuesday.

A statement on their site read: "Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built"

"His spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple"
