South African runner Caster Semenya given feminine makeover

Wednesday September 9, 2009

Gold medal winner Caster Semenya has been given a fabulous new look to grace the cover of South Africa's You magazine.

The 18-year-old athlete sparked questions over her gender after she took top spot in the women's 800 metres at the world championships in Berlin in August.

But the runner, whose front cover photo is accompanied by the headline "Wow, look at Caster now!" has defended the way she looks saying: "I am who I am and I am proud of myself."

"I'd like to dress up more often and wear dresses but I never get the chance," she added as she was pictured in a number of outfits for the publication.

"I've never bought my own clothes, my mum buys them for me, but now I know I can look like this I'd like to dress like this more often."

Speaking about the gender row, Caster said: "I see it all as a joke, it doesn’t upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself."
