Geordie lass Cheryl may need elocution lessons for US stint

Simon Cowell's recommendation that Cheryl join the US version of X Factor resulted in NBC bosses jetting over to Manchester this week.

And after seeing the Girls Aloud beauty in action while filming the forthcoming series of the UK talent show, American executives were left "bowled over by Cheryl."

Although the 26-year-old impressed, producers are apparently worried about the strength of her Newcastle accent.

"They thought she was sassy, smart, charismatic and beautiful," a source at the studio says.

"But while her accent isn't that thick, the Americans really seemed to struggle with it."

Simon Cowell has jokingly offered to pay for Cheryl's speech lessons, and although his  remark was in jest she may well have to go down that road if US bosses think it necessary.

TV chiefs have taken copies of last year's show back to America with the aim of testing reaction from local audiences to her accent.

Fellow Newcastle-born personalities Ant and Dec were also required to undergo voice training for their stint as presenters in the US last year.
