Despite saying that she had wanted to cut off her hair "for years and years" last week, it could be that Emma Watson may have had an ulterior motive for the image change.
The actress, best-known for assuming the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, is apparently in the shortlist to play the role of Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of Steig Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
A source told The Sun: "The character of Lisbeth is a misfit goth-type girl with spikey hair.
"Emma has auditioned with director David Fincher and cut her hair to look the part."
The 20-year old told a US magazine just over a year ago: "Unless something comes along that I feel as strongly about as I did Hermione – like, I felt it was life or death – I don't want to act again."
With the part of Lisbeth being the biggest female role on offer in Hollywood at the moment, as well as the guarantee of a three-film contract and the chance to act alongside Daniel Craig, it is no wonder that Emma is doing everything to increase her chances of landing it.
However, she is not the only one with her eyes on the part - Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart are also rumoured to be interested.
