About a Boy star Nicholas Hoult slums it in Kenya

Actor Nicholas Hoult has spoken out about his eye-opening visit to some of Kenya's poorest slums, describing them to be "like a music festival where you can't get out".

The 20-year-old has just returned from the region after spending a few days visiting two neighbouring slums in Nairobi to promote this year's Christian Aid Week.

"When you first see the sewage and the cramped living conditions and experience the smell, it's stifling. The only comparison I can make with home life is that it's like a music festival where you can't get out, the toilets never get cleaned, and there's no music," he tells GMTV.

"That really doesn't do justice to it. All those I met there were in a vulnerable situation but showing great strength," he adds.

"It's difficult to describe some of the conditions I saw in Kenya as for most of us back home they would be unbearable.

"But visiting the Christian Aid project showed me that simple facilities like toilets and showers and clean drinking water can make such a difference to people's everyday lives. Giving this money isn't a short-term fix. It enables families to build their own futures."
