Boyzone star Stephen Gately found dead in Majorca

The world of music is in shock at the tragic news of the death of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately.

The 33-year-old was found dead on Sunday while on holiday in Majorca with his long-term partner Andy Cowles.

It appears the couple, who wed in a civil partnership ceremony in London in 2006, had gone out for drinks on the Spanish island. After returning to their accommodation Stephen went to sleep but sadly never woke up.

A statement on Boyzone's website confirmed the terrible news. "Stephen tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday with his partner Andrew in Majorca. The rest of the boys will be flying out today," it read.

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh, told a Sunday newspaper: "We're all absolutely devastated. I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We will rally around each other this week. He was a great man."

Former Irish Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has led tributes, describing Stephen as a personal friend and his death as a "huge, huge tragedy" for Irish music and culture.
