Chinese author Mo Yan has won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Born Guan Moye, the author writes under the pen name Mo Yan, which means "don't speak".

Since 1981 the writer has published a series of short stories, including Red Sorghum: A Novel of China.

The tale of the People's Liberation Army received worldwide fame.

Another novel, Big Breasts and Wide Hips is a searing vision of 20th-century China which was banned for its sexual content. However, the book was sold outside the country to international acclaim.

The 57-year-old is the first Chinese national to win the prize.

Mo was sitting with his father when he heard the news, and was said to be "overjoyed and terrified" by Peter England, head of the Swedish Academy who judged the prize.
