Wednesday September 12, 2012

Composed of bestselling authors to eager newcomers, the Man Booker Prize shortlist is more eclectic than ever this year.

The list includes Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall sequel Bring Up The Bodies, set in Tudor Britain, as well as Will Self's modernist meditation on psychosis and memory, Umbrella.

Two debut authors have also made the list. Alison Moore's The Lighthouse speaks a tale of abandonment, whilst Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil details drug addiction in 1970's Mumbai.

Tan Twan Eng's The Garden of Evening Mists, is about the building of a Japanese garden in postwar Malaya, whereas Deborah Levy's Swimming Home focuses on the effects of depression on tourists in the South of France.

The winner of the £50,000 prize will join the ranks of respected authors Ian McEwan, Martin Amis and Zadie Smith.
