Two party-goers die at star-studded SXSW Festival

A man and a woman were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning after they were hit by a car at the South by SouthWest music festival held in Austin, Texas.

The South by SouthWest music festival is one of the biggest in the world hosting more than 80,000 people over the nine day period.

The festival is also famed for its line-up which this year includes; Coldplay, Kanye West, Jay Z, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that 23 others were injured, five on them critically after the drunken motorist tried to evade a pursuing police officer by driving recklessly and significantly faster than the area’s speed limit.

"This is extremely rare," said the officer of the severity of the accident. "In all the years of hosting South By Southwest, we've never seen anything like this."

The driver of the vehicle faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
