Adam Lambert has been honoured with GLAAD's Davidson/Valentini Award, given to a member of the LGBT community who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.
Presented with the award by Spice Girl Mel B, American Idol runner-up Adam said that he was thrilled to "spread acceptance".
"We are right in the middle of two generations with two different perspectives but one common thread - love," said the star.
"With all the differences of opinion both within the LGBT community and elsewhere, the best we can do is to keep it real and to spread a message of acceptance."
The star attended the ceremony with his beloved mother, Leila.
