Clapham Common to host royal wedding campsite?

Monday March 14, 2011

It might not be Buckingham Palace. But for those who haven’t received an invite, Clapham Common could be the alternative place-to-be to celebrate the royal wedding.

There are plans to turn the south London park into a camping ground for three nights so that the public can join in the revelry surrounding the momentous occasion.

Free tea and a giant television are planned for the pop-up campsite, from April 28 to May1.

In the past the common has been used for a range of festivals - including the Ben and Jerry's Sundae festival (pictured). However Lambeth Council have not confirmed whether a licence has been granted for the event.

A council spokesman said: "Clapham Common has staged a number of large scale events so this isn't a one-off."

He added: "However if the event does go ahead it will be the responsibility of the organisers to ensure the common is returned to its original state."

Event organisers Camp Royale said the site would have 24 hour security, hot showers and family zones. There are also plans to create a luxury camping zone.

Their spokesperson said: "We hope that this affordable option will appeal to people who thought they couldn’t afford to join in the fun."
