Thandie Newton reveals racist childhood

Thandie Newton wowed on the red carpet of her new film Half Of A Yellow Sun last Wednesday but BAFTA ward-winning actress revealed that growing up in Cornwall she was the victim of racism.

"It was a beautiful environment, but very backward when it came to racial politics," Thandie said, speaking of her childhood in the Cornish town of Penzance.

The 41-year-old actress also revealed that while her father tried to protect Thandie and her brother, her mother, who is from Zimbabwe, pushed her daughter and son to keep a low profile.

"I was getting good grades; I was a really happy, sparkly child, and she [Thandie's mother] was aware that the more I was achieving, the more resentment there was from other people. But I didn't understand, I was only little, so it was almost like I couldn't do enough to get her praise", Thandie told The Times.

Thandie recently gave birth to her third child, a son named Booker.
