Legendary guitar player and inventor Les Paul dies at 94

Music icon Les Paul, whose solid-body electric guitar paved the way for rock 'n' roll, has passed away at the age of 94.

The inventor, who changed the course of music with the instrument and various multi-track recording methods, had a string of hits over thirty years since the 1940s.

Les passed away in a New York hospital on Thursday, after suffering from pneumonia. His friends and family members were by his side.

And tributes from his musical admirers have already started to pour in.

"All of us owe an unimaginable debt to his work and his talent," says Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.

"Les Paul was a shining example of how full one's life can be; he was so vibrant and full of positive energy,” adds Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash.

Nicole Kidman's country music singer husband Keith Urban says he is "deeply saddened" at the news, but that Paul's spirit will be "very present every time I set foot in the studio."
