Ex-carriage-driver Philip steps in to hand out sport's prizes

Friday May 15, 2009

After giving up competing in the dangerous sport of carriage-racing two years ago, the Duke of Edinburgh was happy to do the honours when it came to handing out prizes for the sport at a recent contest.

The octogenarian Prince, who still practises driving in Windsor Great Park, presented rosettes to winners at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

He seemed to be in good spirits on Thursday, and was spotted  laughing and joking heartily with Penny Romsey, the 56-year-old
wife of his Philip's godson Norton Knatchbull. Penny shares the royal patriarch's enthusiasm for careering round a track and competed as his partner for years.

The Duke has also passed on his love of the sport to daughter-in-law Sophie, who has been groomed to take over his prize team of Fell Ponies in the last few years
