Short starring one-eyed moggy sprinter on line-up at Cannes

It's not quite Chariots Of Fire, but a short clip about a one-eyed, West Yorkshire cat who races her owner to work each morning is due to receive the sort of premiere usually reserved for Hollywood features, by being screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Great Race stars 12-year-old tabby Midge and her parish councillor sprint-partner Martin Humphries. The pair's screen debut came about after a £1000 win in a work competition allowed Martin to turn the tale of his racing pet into a mini movie.

It all started when the rescue cat decided to accompany Martin to work every day. No matter how hard Martin tried he found he could never overtake her. Midge just put a spurt on.  

Using his winnings Martin committed their daily jog to celluloid, adding a soundtrack he wrote himself, sung by a children's choir.  With Cannes in the frame Martin is now eyeing a Disney version - the result could be "one of the greatest children's films of all time," he says
