Nina Davuluri is first Indian American to win Miss America
Nina Davuluri has become the first Indian American to win the Miss America competition.
New York’s representative beat 53 other girls in the swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview rounds of the famous beauty pageant to be crowned the queen.
Unfortunately, however, the announcement of Miss Davuluri being the winner was tarnished by several negative comments expressed over the internet. While many viewers used Twitter to congratulate the competition victor, some users wrote racist messages and hurtful jibes about the 24-year-old’s weight.
In a press conference after the awards ceremony the newly-crowned queen said she simply had to "rise above it" and is looking forward to her role in the year ahead.
The native of Syracuse is looking forward to applying to medical school and using the $50,000 scholarship that comes with the Miss America title.
