Zooey Deschanel has revealed she was unhappy growing up as she was bullied at school.

The star of Channel 4 sitcom New Girl appears on the cover of Allure magazine and revealed she wasn't always as popular as she is now.

Zooey revealed: "Girls spat in my face. People were so mean to me, I'd cry every day."

The 31-year-old actress is now a Hollywood star, but she confessed she still doesn't like to risk reading mean things on the internet.

Zooey - who is currently divorcing her husband Benjamin Gibbard - likes to get out and about to cheer herself up after a break-up.

She said: "I'd probably just go get out of my house. If I'm sad, I listen to happy music."
