Officers have spoken by telephone to former glamour model Katie Price following reports in which she claimed she was raped by a fellow celebrity.
Although the 31-year-old has not officially reported the act, "we have a duty to investigate if a crime did indeed take place", a Surrey Police spokesperson says.
A full interview with the mum-of-three is being arranged.
Fresh from her divorce from Peter Andre, Katie told a magazine about the assault, revealing it was commited by "a very famous celebrity".
The attack is said to have taken place several years ago in London's West End.
