David Cameron runs for children's hospital

As competitor number 600 took his place behind the starting line at Oxford's OX5 Run on Sunday, runners were surprised to recognise him as Conservative party leader David Cameron.

Despite only being asked to fire the starting pistol for the run, which was organised by the city's Children's Hospital, the 42-year-old politician decided to lace up his trainers and participate himself. He was cheered on by his supportive wife Samantha.

And Mr Cameron managed to come in a respectable 289th out of a field of 728 with a time of just under 45 minutes. The Oxford hospital benefitting from proceeds of the run holds a special place in the Cameron family's heart. It was there that Ivan, their late six-year-old son, was treated
