Bestselling Angela's Ashes author Frank McCourt dies at 78

Monday July 20, 2009

Irish-American writer Frank McCourt has passed away in a Manhattan hospice.

The Brooklyn-born 78-year-old was suffering from meningitis and had recently been treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Frank, who penned his Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir in 1996, spent thirty years working as a high school teacher in New York before the publication of Angela's Ashes.

At a young age he travelled with his parents and siblings to Limerick in Ireland, and his time there helped form the basis for his acclaimed novel, which was made into a film starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle in 1999.

He leaves behind a wife Ellen, daughter Maggie, and grandchildren, Chiara, Frank and Jack.
