Pitch prepared for Prince William’s football match

Friday September 20, 2013

The grounds at Buckingham Palace are currently being prepared by the royal household gardeners and Wembley groundsman Tony Stone to create the pitch in the 40-acre garden.

New dad Prince William is to host the first ever football match held at the royal residents on 7 October, to celebrate the Football Association’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the FA, will host the game between the world’s oldest Association Football club, Civil Service FC, and their West-London rivals Polytechnic FC in the royal gardens.

The event will be a tribute to the 400,000 volunteers who help run local matches every year and 150 medals will be presented to grassroot volunteers in thanks and recognition of their dedication to the sport.

William said: "In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level.”
