Deaf actress Ali Briggs returns to Coronation Street this summer

Thursday May 21, 2009

A familiar face returns to the cobbles of Coronation Street this summer. Hearing impaired actress Ali Briggs will rejoin the show in July.

She last starred in the soap in 2005, winning an award for her portrayal of Emily Bishop's neice Freda . Her character disappeared from the programme after being upset by shopkeeper Norris Cole who resented the attention Freda was getting from her aunt.

When she returns in July Freda won't be alone - she turns up with a  fiance in tow.

"Freda was definitely cast in the mould if many great Corrie women; she was a funny, nosy, smart woman who just happened to be hearing impaired," said a spokesperson for the show.

"She provided the opportunity to explore many different reactions to Freda's disability, particularly through Norris who struggled with her deafness. This led to some great comic scenes at Norris' expense"
