Charles is 'on the level': royals charm Brixton locals

Residents crowded round Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall as they visited a deprived area of south London.

Brixton locals seemed to appreciate the royal support, with one local praising the heir to the throne as "on the level, really down-to-earth".

Youth worker Marcus West - who works with children on an estate nearby - revealed that the Prince told him: "keep up all the good work".

Charles' wife, meanwhile, made a good impression by snapping up some mangoes from one of the markets.

"She asked me if they were they ripe and I said yes," said trader Derek Chong, who's had his stall for 20 years. "She was nice and pleasant."

Camilla paid with a Brixton £10 note – helping publicise a scheme to keep local residents' money within the community.
