Gazza sheds a tear as football greats bid farewell to Sir Bobby

Tuesday September 22, 2009

Legends from the world of football came together at Durham Cathedral on Monday to bid a final farewell to the late England manager Sir Bobby Robson.

Alex Ferguson, Gary Lineker and Terry Venables were among 1,000 guests at the service while more than 2,000 fans lined the streets outside.

It was an emotional day for Paul Gascoigne, who became tearful when Tenors Unlimited sang Nessun Dorma, the song that defined the ecstasy and agony of England's 1990 World Cup run to the semi-finals, overseen by Sir Bobby.

Match Of The Day presenter Gary gave an affectionate eulogy in which he praised Bobby's "unquenchable” enthusiasm.

"He loved the game and the game loved him. He was a Lion of a Man. Make that Three Lions. He was fiercely loyal to his players and in return they loved and respected him.

The widow and two sons of Sir Bobby, who died in July at the age of 76, were also present at the memorial.
