Chelsea footballer John Terry is to be charged for racially abusing Queen's Park Rangers player, Anton Ferdinad.
During a match between their two clubs in October, video footage appeared to show the England team captain subjecting his opponent to racial insults.
Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London said: "I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments allegedly made."
The athlete meanwhile has fervently denied the charges against him and has vowed to clear his name.
"I am disappointed with the decision to charge me and hope to be given the chance to clear my name as quickly as possible" he said.
"I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence"
John's club Chelsea have come out in support of their player.
He is due to appear before West London Magistrates Court on February 1.
