Australia has first woman prime minister

Political history was made in Australia this week when a revolt within the ruling party resulted in the country being given its first female prime minister.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard challenged the existing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to a leadership ballot. He then stepped down, acknowledging that key members of the party had lost faith in him.

The Welsh born politician said she made the request, "because I believed that a good government was losing its way".

A former lawyer, Ms Gillard was born in Barry in 1961. Her family migrated to Adelaide when she was four years old in search of a warmer climate to alleviate her lung problem.
