Sir David Attenborough named national treasure

Friday November 25, 2011

Sir David Attenborough has been named Britain's greatest living national treasure - beating Stephen Fry and Sir Paul McCartney in the poll.

The natural history presenter, 85, also triumphed over physicist Professor Stephen Hawking and Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

Broadcaster Stephen was second, followed by former 007 Sir Sean Connery, and ex-Beatle Sir Paul.

Prof Hawking was fifth, followed by World Cup winning footballer Sir Bobby Charlton.

The Harry Potter author was seventh – and the top woman in the list – followed by actress Dame Judi Dench, Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones and Gandhi film director Lord Richard Attenborough, the brother of Sir David, in tenth place.

More than 4,000 people were asked to select Britain's national treasure from a shortlist, in a survey to celebrate the EuroMillions Millionaires Month.

People were asked to vote for the greatest "national living treasure", who they would like to see on a £1 million note.
