Queen loses £50 million in the economic downturn

As a result of the credit crunch the monarch's personal fortune has shrunk by £50 million in the past year.

Falling property and share prices have contributed to the loss. The 82-year-old monarch's investment portfolio, made up largely of shares in blue-chip British companies, has lost 30 per cent of its value and is now worth about £70 million.

Her wealth is listed in the Sunday Times newspaper's annual rich list as £270 million – a 16 per cent fall from the £320 million it was valued at in 2008
