Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a truck while cycling in the early morning hours in Arizona last week.
The sportsman was undergoing an endurance challenge, attempting to make his way running, swimming, rowing and cycling from Los Angeles to New York in just 16 days.
But the serious traffic accident cut the journey short, landing the 38-year-old in the intensive care unit of a Phoenix hospital with a fractured skull and brain damage.
Though James is progressing slowly, his fitness levels allowed him to leave the ICU after three days, explains his wife, Beverly Turner, who was in Las Vegas at the time of the accident and immediately travelled to be with her husband.
"I thank God that the prognosis was as good as it could have been under the circumstances," she told the Telegraph, adding that James is expected to make a full recovery in three to six months.
“It’s a fact of life that we all occasionally wish we could change our husband or wife’s annoying habits," says Beverly.
"But, hand on heart, I can say I want James to stay exactly as he is and come back to me the same driven, focused, kind and loving husband I married.”
