George Clooney named as Berlusconi defence witness

George Clooney has been named as a witness by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in his high-profile trial on charges of under-age prostitution.

The Hollywood star's girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis is also said to be on the 78-strong list alongside MPs and ministers.

But the 49-year-old actor, who has a villa on Lake Como, is at a loss as to explain his inclusion as a witness.

"It seems odd since I've only met Berlusconi once, and that was in an attempt to get aid into Darfur," he said.

Mr Berlusconi, 74, is accused of paying for sex with 17-year-old Moroccan Karima el-Mahroug, also known as Ruby.

He had denied the charges.

The trial is due to begin in Milan on April 6.
