Palace officials spend £300,000 to adapt Bea's student digs

Tuesday June 30, 2009

Royal officials have reportedly spent £300,000 redecorating an apartment in St James's Palace which Princess Beatrice has been using as her student accomodation.

The 20-year-old, who is studying a BA in History and History of Ideas at London's Goldsmiths College, has been living at Apartment No 2, next door to the official residence of Princes William and Harry at Clarence House.

The decision for the princess not to stay in the college's £88-a-week student digs was explained by the increased cost of security it would bring.

Renovations reportedly included a new fitted kitchen and bathroom and new timber flooring in two reception rooms which was considered necessary as the apartment was "very unimpressive" and last decorated "a long, long time ago."

"We used money from the Government to undertake a basic programme of refurbishment and any extra requirements that were more personal to Princess Beatrice herself were paid by the Duke of York or the Queen," the palace official adds.
