Olympic effect makes Emeli Sandé a chart topper

Friday August 31, 2012

After her striking performances at the London 2012 opening and closing ceremonies, Emeli Sandé has won over the British public and topped the 2012 UK Album chart.

Her debut album, A New Version of Events, has seen sales increase by a third since the Olympics, beating Adele's 21 to the 2012 album top spot by approximately 3,200 copies.

The songstress' career soared when she scooped this year's Critics' Choice Awards at the Brit Awards. She has sold more than 660,000 of her debut since its release in February, officialcharts.com has shown.

However, Emeli is far from outselling Adele overall. 21 has sold 4.4 million UK copies to date and is the fifth-biggest selling album of all time.

Managing Director of the Official Charts Company Martin Talbot said: "At a time when it is harder than ever for new artists to break through , it is fantastic that Emeli now has the biggest selling album of 2012 so far."

He added: "It is also apt that Emeli should take over from the inaugural Brits Critics' Choice winner, Adele. Yet another British female singing star has been born."
