Boisterous Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox has announced she is expecting her first child. The self-styled "northern lass" made the revelation on her BBC breakfast show on Wednesday.

"I've got some very exciting, slightly terrifying news for you," announced the 28-year-old, who is married to legendary nightclub DJ Jon Carter. "I've been busting to tell you, quite literally, because I can't hold my belly in any more. I'm three months pregnant!"

"I'm really excited and Jon is really excited too - and so is his son Sam, who is looking forward to having a little brother or sister to boss about!"

Sara is due to leave her early morning programme on Christmas Eve, when Chris Moyles takes over. In the New Year she will be returning to the airwaves in an afternoon slot, before taking maternity leave. "We'll be sure she'll be returning to the station after the baby is born and she'll be welcomed back to Radio 1 with open arms," said a BBC spokesman.

The popular presenter first found fame on Channel 4's The Girlie Show back in 1996. Since then she has also appeared on The Big Breakfast and the late night music show Born Sloppy.
