Back from convalescing on a summer holiday in Ibiza, a tanned and smiling Leslie Ash reappeared on the celebrity scene at the weekend, attending a TV awards ceremony in Manchester.

Still recovering from her brush with MSSA, a variant of a "hospital superbug", the actress arrived at the Michael Elliott Trust Awards on crutches. Her spirits seem high, however, as she continues to bounce back from the infection, which nearly left her paralysed earlier this year.

Accompanying the TV star to the event was her husband, former Leeds footballer Lee Chapman, who was also at Leslie's side during her recuperation on the Spanish isle."I'm very happy to be here," said Leslie, who won the best actress gong for her role in police drama Merseybeat, "and I feel better now."

Forty-four-year-old Leslie is thought to have picked up MSSA while being treated for a broken rib and punctured lung last April. Since then she has been undergoing intense physiotherapy, but is still unable to walk unassisted.
