As EastEnders' ratings dive and the executive producer quits, at least one cast member seems to be making plans for life after the troubled soap.

Nineteen-year-old James Alexandrou, who plays Martin Fowler, has signed up for a six-week class in movie production at the New York Film School, which numbers Martin Scorsese among its former pupils.

According to reports, the actor is taking the prestigious £20,000 course very seriously. "Directing and producing is James’ big passion," revealed an insider. "And when he leaves the soap it's something he'd like to do."

For the moment, however, James, who has been an Albert Square resident since he was 11, apparently has no plans to turn his back on the East End. Confirming the actor has signed up with the school, his spokeswoman says: "This doesn't mean he's leaving the show. It's just something he's always wanted to do."

Although, according to his spokeswoman, James has no plans to leave the award-winning soap, the 19-year-old actor will definitely be undertaking a six-week movie-making course at the prestigious New York Film School
