Nikki Sanderson was all smiles Thursday when Coronation Street scooped the gong for best TV drama at the South Bank Show Awards in London. Nikki, who plays cheeky teenager Candice Stowe on the popular long-running soap, stepped out in style in a shimmering ice-blue satin frock with plunging neckline.

Coronation Street surprised category competitors Dirty Filthy Love and time that a soap has triumphed at the distinguished awards show.

Two of the big winners at the event, which honours achievements in the arts over the past year, were Little Britain's quirky comedians David Walliams and Matt Lucas, who received the best comedy honour.

Also among the ceremony's success stories were pop newcomers Franz Ferdinand, who edged out veteran Morrisey and rockers The Libertines to scoop the best pop act gong. Director Shane Meadows was awarded the best cinema trophy for Dead Man's Shoes, while Paul Abbott, creator of Shameless and Clocking Off, took home a prize for outstanding contribution to the arts.

The South Bank Show Awards honour the UK’s most creative and popular artists in a variety of categories ranging from opera and literature to pop music and television drama.
