Fans of Coronation Street will be saddened to hear that Keith Duffy, who plays Ciaran McCarthy, has decided to leave the hit soap. The former Boyzone singer stated that he would like to spend more time with his family and explore other roles.

"I talked with the producer and we both felt that the character of Ciaran had run its course," revealed the 30-year-old actor. "I will be sad to say goodbye to the great friends that I have made on the cast and crew, but am looking forward to spending more time with my family, who have been incredibly supportive."

Keith's constant commuting between Dublin and Manchester proved to be too much strain. Since joining 'The Street', he has spent Monday to Friday in Manchester, returning to Dublin at the weekends to be with his wife Lisa, son Jordan and daughter Mia. He also has expressed frustration at having to turn down other acting parts because of his obligations with Coronation Street.

Womanising Ciaran McCarthy was a big hit with viewers during the two-and-a-half-year run he spent on the award-winning soap. Ciaran will remain a part of the show until the autumn, affording scriptwriters plenty of time to come up with a dramatic exit for the character.
