The happiness was written all over David Beckham's face on Sunday when he announced the birth of his third son. Speaking to reporters outside the Ruber Hospital in Madrid, the footie ace said that both wife Victoria and their new baby boy were doing well.

"We're over the moon ," he said. "He's gorgeous, healthy and his mum is very good so we're a very happy family." The bundle of joy weighed in at exactly 7lbs when he was delivered by Caesarean at 10.40 on Sunday morning.

David and Victoria have named the infant Cruz - pronounced "Cruth" - which is Spanish for "cross", in the religious sense. While it is more commonly used as a surname, it is said to convey piety and trust. "Cruz is just a name we like," explained the England skipper. "We found it hard this time but we found a name we liked and stuck with it."

Victoria had originally planned to have her baby on Friday 25, but the operation was brought forward when she awoke in discomfort on Sunday morning. After the delivery, chief gynaecologist Dr Vidal Palaez gave assurances there was no need for concern. "Mother and child are in perfect health," he said. "Medical intervention lasted 30 minutes with no complications whatsoever."

Little Cruz joins Brooklyn, who turns six next week, and two-year-old Romeo in the Beckham household.
